Location
The General Store is located six-tenths of a mile south of the Wassaic Railroad Station using the pedestrian walkway and bicycle path at the south end of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. The store is built over the river, adjacent to the “Mural on the Main Street Bridge” (2003) and across the street from a new bicycle shop in the old Luther showcase cattle barn.
About
Although this historic General Store has been in continuous use in this same location since the 1920’s, the following goals were established in the past two decades by the current ownership:
- Retail Grocery: Emphasis on health foods and organic products.
- Wholesale: Co-op type purchasing for small family farms located in the interstate region.
- Public Education: History and preservation, geography and maps, library and reading material, round table discussions.
Travelers
Because Wassaic Hamlet is the last stop on the Harlem Valley Rail Line for travelers leaving Grand Central, the MTA does not provide an actual railroad station building as it did previously. The General Store provides human support to those who need train schedules and to the railroad when there are conditions that need to be reported, such as cattle on the tracks.
