Chess & Literacy Development

Opportunity for Children & Adults

This General Store always tries to make time for children who wish to learn to play chess—whether short sessions for beginners on snow days and after school, or more challenging continuous games with older kids.

During the years when the High School provided guidance for a Chess Club, we were happy to help strengthen younger local learners to support that effort. Previously, older folks routinely scheduled their times to play; however, this has now been limited to outdoors during warmer weather for those who have been vaccinated and are willing to wear masks.

Simultaneous Tournament

Covid-19 has somewhat interrupted planning for what will eventually be an annual event. We expect to have someone on each July 4th weekend who will take on all comers for simultaneous play in our Middle Meadow, located between the General Store and the Lantern Inn on Main Street, Wassaic.

(Not to be confused with Main Street in Ameniaville or any of the other separate historic hamlets of Amenia.)
